The very first line in the first reprinted newspaper column made me laugh. THAT was a first for me. There are plenty of funny, acerbic, sarcastic lines peppered throughout this collection of columns. However, the constant barrage of examples showing politicians, unsavory businesspeople, and Floridians in a negative light eventually overwhelmed me. The former Jim Crow state may now be a huge tourist destination and Disney Mecca, but the place is still marinating in a swamp's worth of conservative politics and unethical shenanigans.Mr. Hiaasen's pieces have the feel of the late, great Chicago columnist Mike Royko (1932-1997.) Also like Mr. Royko, Mr. Hiaasen was born, raised and has lived his entire life in the state he very much loves. The dude is seriously pissed at witnessing the out-of-control growth, the rampant pollution, the horrific crimes and plethora of low-wage service jobs to support tourism as well as residential development. There are a healthy dose of pieces which focus on Florida, but national issues are also given attention. Some of the topics covered are the Terri Schiavo fiasco, Guantanamo, the sub-prime mortgage meltdown, Haitian refugees, Catholic sex abuse, Presidents Bush and Obama as well as Vice-President Cheney, illegal farm workers, George Zimmerman & Trayvon Martin, the NRA, the Iraq War, Florida's stand-your-ground law and the superficial media.After reading a few columns, it doesn't take an Albert Einstein to realize Mr. Hiaasen is a unabashed liberal with major axes to grind. Most of his material is sarcastic in tone but supported by valid facts. I found only a few of the columns to be mediocre. Overall, the book is an educational and entertaining collection of pieces which were originally published from 2001 through 2012. I was surprised that many of the low-rating reviews for 'Dance of the Reptiles' were because readers didn't realize it was a collection of newspaper columns. Heck, people, it says "selected columns" on the front AND Miami Herald columns on the back cover. Maybe reading material about politics and social issues was above their ken. As for me, I enjoyed it.
Having lived in Florida and mercifully escaped the craziness, I can attest to the truth that CH brings to these articles that he wrote for the Miami Herald. It's great to have them gathered in a book to enjoy and also to be "mindboggled" at the kind of ridiculous, idiotic stuff that goes on in every nook and cranny of Florida. When he talks about the buffoonish legislature, he's not joking. The "joke" is only on the residents of the state who have voted the idiots into office. I'll never forget one of my most unforgettable moments in the whacko world of FL and it's "laws." When I registered my car, I asked about car inspections -- when, where, etc. having come from a state that mandated car inspections. I was told that FL didn't require inspections -- and the reason -- some of the counties wanted to do it and others didn't so the "lege" threw up their collective hands and said -- we can't agree so we won't mandate them. Hence, Florida has some of worst pieces of mobile junk on the roads of any state in the union. This is the same legislature that brought the world the "Stand Your Ground" gun law and which allows every goober who wants one to carry a gun everywhere he goes. It's rather chilling to be in Publix and realize that you are surrounded by a lot of people carrying a gun who may decide he wants to do a little target practice in the cereal aisle.Hiaasen also highlights the stupidity of the US government still kowtowing to a group of south FL Cubans who are still holding the US hostage to their hatred of Castro which has prevented the US from dropping the embargo on Americans being able to easily visit Cuba. Meanwhile --- we can freely visit and trade with Vietnam -- a country that accounted for the deaths of 55,000American military. Hiaasen proves the point the truth is stranger than fiction and that "you can't make this stuff up" when it comes to revealing the crazy stuff that occurs on a regular basis in FL and with more frequency in the rest of the US as that brand of crazy spreads via the Tea Party crazies and politicians like Marco Rubio, Allen West, Rick Scott and other assorted plagues -- including Jeb Bush that have spread from FL.
I am a greatful fan of Carl Hiaasen but this offering is poor at best. As someone wrote, reading "newspaper columns" and old columns at that, does not make for good reading if one is a Hiaasen fan. I let my desire to read a good Hiaasen novel/story and did not pay close enough attention to the already negitive reviews. If you are a fan of Hiaasen and his great stories and story telling DON'T bother buying, paying for or wasting your money with Dance Of The Reptiles. It ain't worth it!
Some of the columns have a bitterness to them which made it hard to sustain. I enjoyed his other detective madcap murder mystery novels quite a bit. His main theme, warranted, is the heartbreak of seeing environmental destruction for superficial glamour. perhaps it will become "too expensive". Our immediate future is certainly grim as protections and previous legal pathways to impede development are being gutted. Have no doubts that much of the swamp can restore itself, in time.
YOU CAN ALWAYS GET A LAUGH FROM CARL HIAASEN. HOWEVER, I AM A SNOBIRD IN FLORIDA, AND, IN MY OPINION, FLORIDA POLITICS NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME IN HOW THE LEGISLATIVE CAN BE BOUGHT BY THE HIGHEST BIDDER. THE LEGISLATURE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HOW THEIR LAWS AND ATITUDES AFFECT THE STATE IN THE LONG RUN. THIS IS AN EYE OPENING LOOK INTO FLORIDA POLTICS.
If you like looking back in time a little bit to see how screwed up a political writer can get, as well as the magnitude of his idiocy, this is the book for you. Carl's a great novel writer and I buy them all the day they're out. A great novelist but just an absolutely off the reservation columnist. Reptiles starts out ok but is quite tedious at the end. Best of luck with it.
