I confess that my career interests and spiritual pursuits inspired me to purchase How To Start A Blog That People Will Read by Mike Omar on Saturday November 1, 2014. I was also inspired to engage in blogging after discovering Blog Inc. by Joy Deangdeelert Cho back in 2013. Imagine my positive surprise when a local area newspaper covered a person with her own blog during just this past week (I see this as a positive spiritual sign from the universe about my plans for my google blogspot and tumblr profiles). Last, but not least, for me having a blog will allow me to store websites and interesting articles that I observe from places such as Yahoo News, Forbes, Money, CNBC, Town and Country, Womens Health, Inc. etc. Some of the following informative ideas in Omar's book: some of his recommended websites and pointers on writing and setting up blog posts (pages forty one to forty six, pages 47-56: finding ideas for posts and writing non search engine optimized blog posts, and pages 78-83 (promoting your blog). In the spirit of this book and discussion of blogging, I admit that I plan on reviewing more items that I have already purchased and website links (within the next 2-3 days) not as a way to show off, but more as a way to share and get feedback on topics of interest that come to me via creative and/or professional inspiration.
I am pretty sure that Mr. Omar has written a very good book on how to make money blogging, but I hesitated to go further to investigate for a few reasons.First, some of the links and videos that was referred to in his book and website do not work anymore, so I did not want to implement his model due to incomplete information.Second, his book and website ask readers to send him an email to tell him about themselves, and he said that he would respond. I sent two emails to introduce myself, but never received a response. However, I did see where after I sent my email, he looked me up on LinkedIn and reviewed my information.Because of the incomplete information and no response, I did not feel comfortable following his model. So, I associated with individuals who offered different models, who provided complete information and immediate responses and coaching, and they have helped me to reach my goals.
Buy a domain name. Sell ads or use google Adsense, pick a topic, blog about it. The end. This is not a book, it's a collection of the writer's prior articles (he says so up front). So, many paragraphs are repeated (some more than a few times!). There is no consistency or flow. And he seems hellbent on convincing you to become a web developer--because that is how he made his money. Oh, and maybe blog a bit, whatever, but the real money is in web development. Did i mention to sell your web development skills for $500 a pop? Oh, and dont forget, you can make money doing web development. And on and on he goes. Don't make the same mistake I did, thinking its only a few bucks. Save your money, and your time reading this dribble.Oh! And he repeatedly tries to get you to click on links that no doubt make him $ for each click!
I've had a blog going for about a year and was at the point where I was outgrowing the site and badly needed information to give the blog some moment. I figured since I never really read up on how to start a blog before I launched it that I should go back and do some research. I thought perhaps I missed some important elements. I thought perhaps I missed some details that left holes in my approach and I've been feverishly reading everything I can about blogging to fill in the holes. Unfortunately, it seemed I didn't miss much according to this book. I was extremely disappointed that I didn't learn any new or cool things. I was kind of mad that this book didn't give me any crucial details and cool tips that I might have missed along the way. Basically it was a game plan for just starting a blog. There were no thrills and no fills in this book ;-( In fact, when I got very little information from this book, I ordered and turned to another blogging book and was amazed at the difference in content, copy and inspiration. I think the lack of pictures and examples in this book made it very flat and boring.
I bought this book with high hopes thinking it was just a few bucks. It was a good read and contained some valuable information about SEO that I did not know before. However, the author does talk in the beginning about ways to make money online. I bought the book because I wanted information on how to start a blog, not make websites for other people! It's a short read so I didn't get as much information about how to start a blog then there should have been.
This book is about making money from your blog. To build the blog the author uses the Wordpress platform, which provides templates and tools for people to create a web site without having to write any code. The author provides introductory guidelines for making money in the book and a large number of links to his web site for more detailed information. This is a pretty common method of collecting the reader's email so the authors can build a large mailing list, where the reader in exchange for getting information agrees to receive additional marketing email from the author. I have provided my email in exchange for additional information in the past, and some of these sign ups resulted in daily emails for ever. Many authors provide the bonus material early in the book, but it is always best to make the decision later once you determine you truly like the style of the author so you will be sure you will like the additional content you will be getting on continuous basis.The book contains an introduction to a number key topics. I say introduction because the topics are not covered in great detail. For example, explaining how to set up a web site could have been more clear if it had more than one screen shot. The author touches on building Wordpress website, SEO, monetizing, affiliates, mailing list, advertising. The information in the book is not unique but it is a good summary of common approaches to to monetizing your blog. I would have preferred all additional information to be included in the book without having to sign up on the web site.Ali Julia review
