giving this a 5 ,, for the following reasons,, 1. I used this book, along the PA review for Dummies prepping for my test,, they offset each other well 2. when you go online you get the full bank of questions (600 I believe), 3. Not a member of the AAPA,, still able to access test and get 20 hours credit "Self Assessment" 4. Bought the book on amazon, saved money, Iot less than AAPA website,, plus the self assessment hours 5. The best for last,, initial certification in 1990, the test are getting harder (mine and many others opinion),, well prepared and passed my test!!!!!,,10 yrs to the next test,, want tell you how old I'll be,, butttttttttt a lot closer to 70 (ouch!!) than 60!!!
Well…if you have to do the PANRE, and I did, again, this is the book you have to get.I guess I overdid it on prep, but I passed, again, and that's what counts. My whole career has been in orthopedics. We don't do trauma. I've never worked in primary care. I was scared. I really liked Davis's PA Exam Review. That was a good start, but not comprehensive enough. PANCE Prep Pearls was innovative, but whoa the format was difficult to read. I did the Hippo review program (not my style), the Rutgers video program (pretty good!) and the Emory program (the best!). They were all good for CME's.If I were to do it over again, and I will in 10 years (yippee), I think I would start with this book. Then use Davis's, and then do question banks over and over.In my opinion, all of them "prepare" you for the PANRE, but none of them really prepares you for the PANRE. The questions in the actual test were different than any of the question banks, and I did a lot of questions. So, the real goal of all this preparation is to gain knowledge which you then apply when you take the test.With than in mind, I could probably do as well next time without spending a lot of my CME money on prep materials! Oh well, I needed the CME's anyway.
I expected more from this review book. The outline content was bare bones in a lot of the chapters and the material was outdated. For example, it still has the JNC 7 guidelines for treating HTN, even though the JNC 8 guidelines were published in 2014 and this book was published in 2015. I got really tired of reading "treat with appropriate antibiotics" or "antibiotics might be needed for more serious disease" - well which ones? I spent too much time "hunting" for the correct treatment in other books or online because it wasn't listed in this review book. Also while I was looking up other sources to answer questions, I discovered that recommended treatment for some disorders or diseases had changed and what is listed in this review book is no longer recommended. The pretest and posttest questions were okay, but definitely need to be updated. Example, in one question, it asks which drug increases insulin sensitivity? Of the four possible answers, one of them is "position"...which is the correct answer because it states it is Actos. Actos is pioglitazone, not position. Another question had the answer explanation give incorrect data. It stated that ADA defines DM II with a HGBA1C >6.0%. No, it's 6.5 %. Also it's not really 600 total questions when the same questions word for word with the same answer are used in different areas (both in pretest and posttest). This review book needs to be updated with content that is accurate, reliable and more up to date.
I received a COUNTERFEIT PHOTOCOPY of the book. As a "used" book purchase, I wasn't too upset about the fact that the code on the front cover was "scratched" off, but when you closely, it is a high quality image. Page numbers are printed in the inside border. Do not buy from AVOLS BOOKS, unless you want an expensive counterfeit.
I just used this to take the PANRE for the second time. I did not use much else this time around, and focused mainly on cardio and pulmonology and then a few other more heavily weighted topics. I did pay attention to the blueprint to see what was weighted the most. I passed. It was a harder test for me this go around. I don't know if it was because I did not prepare as much as the previous time or if 13 years out of school is having an impact. I should have (and will next time if the test remains in existence in 10 years) used the Emory University CME Review course as well. I think the two would be enough to get anyone through the PANRE.This resource gave good explanations, but the chapters were pretty long for a review. I love that it is small and portable and I was able to use it almost anywhere in the few days leading up to my test. I lost my password to the on-line question bank so I just used the book.
This is the ultimate PANRE prep book, I have used this book for every PANRE and have never had any trouble. I have taken 3 PANRE’s so far, most recently April 2018, and have never had a problem. The online test bank is an invaluable resource! I read the book twice and then do the test questions and have never had a problem passing. I highly recommend this book. Note to publishers: please use thicker stock paper, this edition the paper stock was much thinner that previous editions; I like to underline, highlight and write a lot of notes in the book, the thicker stock paper is better suited for this.
I rented the book for 12 weeks, good price. Passed the PANRE with a great score, but also took a review course ( I'm very geeky and took no chances). This book can be a bit wordy but covers everything you need to study. The 300 pre test questions are really similar to ones on the actual exam. Returning to amazon SO easy, I saved the box. Renting was great cuz I'm good for another 10 years, no need to own it.
