From the Author: 5 Tips for Sculpting in Blender 1. Work rough to smooth. Don't start adding details to your sculpts until you're happy with the overall shapes. Otherwise, you'll end up having to re-do details later if you have to correct mistakes, or worse, you'll end up leaving mistakes in because you don't want to disrupt those nice details you spent all that time on. Enjoy the freedom you have in the early stages of sculpting, and be confident in making big brushstrokes when laying down the broad shapes of your sculpts. You can worry about the details later. 2. Add and subtract. A common mistake for those new to sculpting is to build up forms and correct mistakes by adding more and more volume to their sculpts. This can sometimes get out of control, disrupting the overall proportions and resulting in big, inflated looking characters. Instead, refine your model using the subtractive and additive modes of each sculpt brush, and watch your model's silhouette to make sure that the overall shape stays under control. 3. Break symmetry. When sculpting characters, it can be tempting to rely on Blender's symmetry tools to sculpt both sides of your character at once. This is great when you're just beginning a sculpt, but real characters have varying degrees of asymmetry, and there can be big differences between the two sides of a character. Decide for yourself when it's the right time to turn off symmetry for your specific sculpt, but definitely do it before you get down to the really fine details. 4. Use Blender's hiding tools to sculpt difficult to reach areas. Blender has some nice tools for hiding geometry when sculpting, which can be found in the 3D Viewport header in Sculpt mode. You can hide based on masking, or draw a bounding box to hide polygons. You can also use the shortcut Alt-B to restrict Blender's Viewport to only draw objects within a bounding box, which works in any model. 5. Check your Viewport camera settings. Bring up the Properties region of the 3D Viewport (hotkey N) and adjust the Lens setting in the View panel. This adjusts the perspective of your view and makes a big difference to how the proportions of your sculpt will appear. When looking close up at a face, noses can look big and bulbous and the sides of heads look to be far in the distance with too small a lens value. Try to match the perspective you see in your reference. If you aren't working from reference, a value of around 100mm works well for sculpting faces.

For those not familiar with Blender, it is a powerful, highly versatile, and completely free 3D design, modeling, animation, and rendering program available over the internet. It has an international user base and instruction is readily available from many sources. Its interface is not intuitive and will take some time to learn. Blender Master Class is copyright 2013 and is current to Blender 6.I have read several texts in preparation for learning Blender. This one impressed me the most. Instructions are clear, well illustrated, and show the author's mastery of the program as well as his abilities to write and to teach. I was especially impressed by his illustrations of the sculpting process in Blender: in Mr. Symond's capable hands it appears to have a range of abilities approaching those of Z-Brush. I recommend this inspiring book highly for Blender novices as well as experienced users.I am not a highly trained 3D modeler; at best I am an informed hobbyist. I can't address details that may be missing from the text. My only immediate reservation was that Mr. Simonds did not address animation in Blender in any detail; he acknowledged this would take a separate book.I never use any text as a single source.I have read and also recommend "Mastering Blender" by Tony Mullen (available through Amazon, my edition is 2009), "Blender for Dummies" (like me), "The Essential Blender" (my edition is 2008), and "Blender 3D: Architecture, Buildings, and Scenery" (2008) by Allan Brito. I am looking forward to reading "Digital Modeling" by William Vaughn, which has been highly recommended by other reviewers.This book also discusses 2-D image processing with GIMP, the "General Image Manipulation Program" also available free over the internet. Personally I use Photoshop, but I understand GIMP to be comprehensive and powerful.

Sometimes he talks about figures that are on the next page, and just casually drops large changes in the project without fully explaining them, at least in my opinion. Strange that it is so highly rated and I just can't get into it. It really isn't a step by step as I was hoping for, rather it is more like he just wrote down what he was thinking as he did something. Probably great for some people but it's just not written in a style that I like and I found it confusing to get through. Put a lot of information at the beginning that was bound to be forgotten by the time it was used again.

Not a great place to start if your new to 3d modeling. there are some fundamental skills that are glossed over if you learn to sculpt before then redoing the whole mesh with a topology method. don't get me wrong, these skills are important as well, but a newbie would be better served to learn proper quad modeling technique first, then adding the sculpting methods to their tool kit later on.i would recommended working through the blender fundamentals book first, then move on to this one. perhaps support the blender foundation by purchasing some of their tutorial DVDs along the way, Blenderella would be an awesome one to work through after completing blender foundations book and before moving on to this one. then if your brave, move on to rigging and animation!

for me, trying to learn something like blender is very difficult to learn with a book. Blender is difficult and frustrating enough without having to compound it with words. I have looked through and read some of it and found that the book is full of useful information, but I learn better with a video. this book would have been a lot more useful if the DVD provide with the book showed a video on how to do some of the more complicated steps such as character design. I can't give it a 5 because of that, but I can't give it less than a 4 because it is a really good detailed book. I think someone other than me could find this book very helpful.

When I was learning Blender...it seems like eons ago but it was last year...the only book I could get my hands on for the new interface was Roland Hess' Blender Foundations. While Hess' book is a great book if you're new to 3D or Blender and want to use Blender by itself to model, animate, and render, it really isn't for game modeling. Game modeling is a specialized field of its own, and there really is no book devoted to the topic for Blender (I myself have thought about putting one out) and the tutorials available online are spotty at best. This book covers most of the topics you need to understand many of the workflows that can be applied to game design. While it won't teach you the bare basics of using Blender (there are numerous tutorials on things) it fills in many of the gaps that are noticeably absent in the educational content available. Highly recommended.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand the introduction to Blender is good and the explanation of tha basic operations are clear. On the other hand the exercises don't have step by step instructions but rather general guides on how to proceed.The first modeling exercise is a full body bat creature, which is a daunting task for a beginner and it is rushed through in ten pages.I can't recommend this for a beginner. It is probably more suited for someone with intermediate modeling skills.

This is a good information book that the author produced with shortcuts from other free/open source graphics and paint programs but he leaves the reader to "figure" out how to complete the Blender modeling of the bat creature. Again I purchased the book as a tutorial from square 1 to step by step completion. If I wanted to figure out how to do it myself I wouldn't have purchased the book. It is worth the money for what tuts he did do plus the other info.
