I don't even collect baseball cards and I enjoyed the heck out of this book. However, I do understand Tanner's relationship with little rectangles of cardboard. Almost thirty years before Tanner got bit by the collecting bug, I avidly collected little rectangles of cardboard depicting Universal monsters, movies, cars, spaceships, etc...just about every non-sport card produced. And comic books. Coins. Stamps. Books. Rocks & fossils. Etc. Etc. Etc. The author's anecdotes of his youth, of chasing key cards, of valuing his work by how he could enlarge his collection, of building an avocation into a vocation...all struck a chord with me, frequently made me smile, often made me laugh. Although there is a great deal of useful information for those who want to follow in the author's footsteps, the book is eminently enjoyable simply as a memoir. It is well written, professionally produced and lots of fun to read.
Just finished the book and I liked it. The biographical narrative was compelling and certainly wasn't expecting that aspect when I cracked open the book. The anecdotes about collecting were usually very interesting. You certainly learn much about the "supercollector". I think anyone reading who collects anything could relate to his experience.Also provides a nice synopsis of the state of the market for modern (i.e. post 2000) baseball cards and gives some solid advice on selling baseball cards in general.
This was a fun ride through the twists and turns of Tanner's great collecting journey and amazing Jose Canseco collection. Interspersed through the buying and selling are important life lessons that I think many of us collectors have either learned the hard way or have yet to come to terms with. If Tanner ever does a second edition, I would love it if he included pictures.
I enjoyed most of this book. It was ok to read and it did not take too much time to finish.
Fantastic read! As a baseball card collector, I appreciate Tanner sharing his journey within the hobby as a supercollector. More importantly, I appreciate the message of faith he shares.
This book was an enjoyable read and I don't even know much about baseball. I didn't think that baseball card collecting was that big of a thing anymore. I was surprised that not only is it still a hobby, but a way to make money and new friends. He does a good job explaining his journey from casual collector to super collector. It also made me reevaluate my life and encouraged me to focus more on my relationship with God.
Well written book from the same era I collected, was very easily able to connect to a lot of the memories in Tanner’s book. I thoroughly enjoyed this read as it brought back a bunch of wonderful childhood memories I have of the hobby. Thanks for taking the time to write this and the Canseco story is incredible! 5 Stars!
