There was something about the title of this book, “Goliath Must Fall†that grabbed my attention as a book I must read. I questioned the word “mustâ€, after all, Goliath did fall, but why “must†he?I began the book with my own opinion of who my Goliath was and what needed to be done to make him fall. After Louie's explanation of who and what our giants are made of, I realized that I was wrong.The Goliath that I thought was my own turned out to be a symptom of many other giants that have been holding sway in my life. Fear, anger, control and even comfort have their hold on me. It took reading this book, with Louie's examples of situations for me to be able to see my giants with new eyes. His explanation that David was Jesus also showed me who had slayed my giants at the cross, that my thoughts and actions were what were still propping them up and that it was past time for me to finally let them fall.Louie gives a suggestion of some actions to take over a 40 day period which will help. I've read that it takes at least 30 day period to create a habit (good or bad). The number 40 is such a Biblical number and, in appropriate in this instance for the days that Goliath taunted the Israelites. I intend to follow this suggestion to break down my habits that are keeping these giants on their feet.This is a book that I will turn to again and again as I am sure that my giants will try to get their footings in my life once more. While the book describes events in the pastor's and others lives, the ultimate direction it always points to is Christ, the giant slayer, all-sufficient and victorious. Because of Him, indeed, Goliath must fall.
It is nice to have someone who takes a section in the book and talk about the mental illnesses of depression and anxiety who had actually LIVED WITH THEM! I have had so many well meaning people of faith tell me “just have more faithâ€...it only made my symptoms worse for the thought of “I’m not doing it right or well enoughâ€.This book began to change a perspective on these two issues for me. I didn’t want to put it down. I am not saying with will cure mental illness or that you won’t need the help of a dr or medicine, but I am saying it offers a perspective that I needed and one that helped me to start putting my own illness into a perspective that has started to help me see my giants for what they are.If you haven’t seen the series on TV (although I hate the station it is played on) this series is also worth watching. It isn’t the book all over again but it is another tool for our giants in life.I thank God for finding this book, written by a man of God who has actually stood in the depths of depression and anxiety.
After reading this book, I'm ready to SLAY GIANTS! Anxiety, fear, rejection, addiction giants are big, but Louie reminds us, JESUS is BIGGER. Louie as always is encouraging, inspiring people in the most humble way. Louie calls out the enemy for who he is...a giant liar!!!! Then, in typical authentic, loving, encouraging Louie fashion, he offers REAL LIFE, specific ways to retrain our thinking to defeat those giants. GET READY to let those giants FALL and LIVE LIFE VICTORIOUSLY with JESUS!
I have been reading Louie Giglio's books and listening the Passion City Church's podcasts for many years (I recommend both). Goliath Must Fall is the absolute best book to date. Louie has been given such an amazing gift from God; I feel like God speaks through Louie on our behalf. So many people in our world are struggling with so many different forms of giants. The insight from this book (spoiler alert) that - we aren't David, we don't have to defeat our giant - is absolutely freeing. God really is David in our story and he has already defeated our giants for us. Still, we struggle daily even knowing this great truth! I recommend this book to anyone struggling with their "giant" no matter how big or small - anxiety, sadness, worry, feelings of inadequacy - the list can be so long. Please take a half hour out of your day and start reading. God will lead you down the path to overcome your giant!
Louie Giglio has once again written a book that speaks directly into my everyday life and situations. This book was so powerful and convicting that I actually had to put it down at times just to process all God was doing in my life as I read. If you've ever felt beat down, conquered, or defeated, this book is definitely for you!
