“Equality for Women—Prosperity for All†is a provocative title. Can it really be true? Haven’t we been discussing equality for women for decades and made significant progress in this area? The book presents a sobering overview of the current status of play in different countries, cultures, and professions based on recent research and analysis of individual researchers, governments, and international organizations such as the UN, World Bank, and IMF. It is eye opening to read about the injustices, lack of opportunities for women, including education, labor market and unequal treatment that still exist in many places. This overview of the state of play and creating awareness about its consequences in terms of human rights, justice, social instability, and economic growth are among the book’s main contributions. The reader cannot easily conclude that this is an issue of the past and that we just need to pay more lip service to gender equality. The problems run much deeper. The book touches on possible areas that need to be addressed: legal and property rights (including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)), education for all, emphasizing that the empowerment of women has to take place both at the global and personal levels. It is particularly persuasive, when it argues that the economy will suffer when half of the world’s population is not allowed to contribute fully to the life of a nation. It is not just a matter of empowerment of women, but the benefit for the society as a whole. It gives several helpful examples to support this view. In the end the reader can make his or her own judgment, but it is hard to ignore its basic conclusion that “gender equality is vital for us all, and essential for a more just and prosperous world.â€
It would be difficult not to write a solid defense of gender issues with the data available from the World Bank, and August Lopez Claros, certainly delivers. From the first chapter he makes the case that development focused on improving women’s lives, providing them access to decision-making, governance, policy whether about education, improved health or even national security and immigration benefits not just women but the society to which they contribute. He produces economic evidence of this, showing how employment, national as well as family budgets do better when women are encouraged to participate as equals. Bahiyyeh Nakhjavani, co-author, takes a different approach both philosophical, spiritual and moral, but making an equally valid case by examining culture and religion as past reasons for inequity but firmly criticizing their potential role in any equitable future. It’s an interesting balance of hard-headed economics with a softer approach to a subject that has been a major focus of development theory. The data shared sheds a brighter light on a subject matter that may have become ho-hum in the field as practitioners pay lip service to an issue that many in authority find irrelevant. If I have a complaint it is a wish that the authors had also looked at the role the discipline of economics, and the greed of market forces have played in keeping women down. Hopefully Mr. Lopez-Claros’ next book will tackle that subject.
