This was a very interesting book and I would have given it five stars except for the way the author went over some of his observations too many times which I didn't think was necessary. He also didn't seem to understand that Pope Paul VI was correct in his view on birth control especially considering that when he wrote the book this country was witnessing widespread divorce, adultery, and abortion all of which the Pope had warned about in the encyclical Humanae Vitae. As a Catholic I found his position on contraception to be very disheartening but he is entitled to his opinion. Albino Luciana would probably have been a great pope except for his position on birth control and his reforms of the Vatican would have been a needed change.
It is extremely important that ordinary Catholics read this book. It will "open" their eyes to the reality of Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict VI. Their interest was mostly money. They didn't want to know how it was gotten only that it was obtained.These popes and probably past popes have let the church of Jesus down. They were in cohoots with the Mafia. Pope John Paul I was on the way to reforming the church and bringing about substantial changes that would benefit the church and that's why hewas murdered. Read the book and weep for Pope John Paul I.
This was an OK read....Jumped around a lot between the two decades of the 70's & 80's and you could tell it was written or had been recorded from the dialog of a true mobster.
I first read this book in the mid 1980s - about 6 years after Pope John Paul I died. David Yallop was even kind enough to reply to an email I sent him about 4 years ago asking if any more evidence had surfaced regarding the mysterious circumstances surrounding the Pope's death. He told me that, indeed, more information had come to hand. If I remember correctly, he said he was trying to get the publisher to reprint the book with an addendum that included the updates. I have never seen that.Regarding the quality of this book ... it was compelling and disciplined. Yallop didn't sensationalize an already sensational story and allegation. Conspiracy theories are almost as distrusted as UFO sightings and used car salesmen so it is essential that the author maintain a cool hand in relating the story and the evidence. And Yallop did exactly that.I didn't read the book to feed a personal propensity towards conspiracy theories and I'm not a Catholic. In truth, I had looked at the face and countenance of Pope John Paul I in newspaper articles and on television and found him to be my image of St. Francis or even a close relation to Jesus Christ. He had a look of peace and contentment about him. He was the best type of leader ... someone you wanted to emulate.And then he was dead. A man who had relatively few health problems and whose only enemies were within the power structure of the Church suddenly died.The author takes us on a journey that includes a back story on Albino Luciani, the unlikely Pope who came from humble beginnings in Northern Italy. There are character studies of the Vatican hierarchy and the businessmen with whom they made their multi-million dollar investments. The environment in which John Paul I is elected as Pope where the air was thick with intrigue, backroom deal-making and shady business practices.Some of you may say, "So what? We know about scandal in the Catholic church. Why go back and look at this small piece of history?" Because discovering the truth in history is like learning a truth from your personal experiences in life. It makes you more discerning when thinking through the truth about how things happen and why. In the early 1940s millions of Jewish people were marched into camps to take a shower. Of course, we all know, the shower was a gas chamber from which there was no escape. They had so little dignity as they gasped for their last breaths of air. The public should not blindly accept questionable explanations for profound events.Enough said ... good book!
Wow, what a book. I am going to order another for my friend. I enjoyed underlining and making side notes. I can't believe how much was covered up or 'turned a blind eye' to. Good reading. It is not a novel, it is more like a history book. Very good.
I read this book over 20 years ago. I was published in the beginning of the 80' after the death (or murder) of John Paul I. This is an very interesting book and includes pictures. John Paul I lasted 1 month. It was not clear the reason of his death (at least the unofficial one)and so remained a mystery for decades. But this death was connected by others caused by very powerful people.I have given quite a few copies of this book to friends, it is such an interesting read. I highly recommended it
Historically very important! Very thoroughly researched book by author David Yallop! If book information had been allowed to be presented to a court of law a number of Vatican Officials and their Mafia cohorts may have spent the rest of their lives in prison for the murder of Pope John Paul!
Great detail and sound reasoning on why John Paul I died prematurely. In my opinion, the corruption in the church was and is widespread.
