I learned so much about bees and how they live in the world and how valuable they are. This book reminded me of the book, Lab Girl, where I learned so much about trees. Don't underestimate the complexity of nature. Learning how bees took care of each other filled the hole left in Meredith's life. Good read!
I was deeply touched by The Honey Bus. I, fortunately, did not share in the author’s difficult family life, but I was a sensitive child, taking a lot in and thinking about it, just as little Meredith does. I could relate very well to the way that she responded to the circumstances she found herself in. I am very much a nature lover, and a bee lover, and have shared some of the same thoughts about bees as May writes here. (My grandfather raised bees too, and my husband and I are getting ready for our own first hive.)I love the way May shares her quiet, introspective outlook. To me, it accurately portrayed the feelings and reactions of a sensitive child. I loved hearing about little Meredith turning to nature (bee) study, both as a refuge and as a joyful, anticipatory pleasure.I’ll leave you with a quote from the book: “I wanted to understand everything that the bees were doing, to be able to read them the way he could. Because when I let myself get lost in a beehive, my mind could stop spinning. I was able to slow down and relax with the task of simply paying attention. Serenity came as I shifted my worried mind to the bees and their behaviors. I felt a comforting assurance that there was hidden life all around me, and that made my own problems seem smaller somehow.†I, too, felt such a thing, though, as a five year old, I could not have put it into words this well. I’m glad that May looked back at her childhood and has put such words to the feelings for us to share.This would be a wonderful book for the parents of sensitive children to read.But that’s JustMe.
"The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage and a Girl Saved by Bees†by Meredith May is a brilliant gem of this genre. May begins by describing – from the perspective of her five-year-old self – a vicious scene on anger between her parents, in which her mother is flinging objects (including a bowl of hot stew) and her father is being ineffective. Subsequently, their mother takes Meredith and her younger brother Matthew across country from Rhode Island to California, seeking shelter with the children’s grandmother and step grandfather. Thereafter Meredith's parents are divorced and the father remarries, but the mother goes into an ongoing depression which begins with neglect and escalates into abuse. “Granny†seems to be determined to coddle “Momâ€, enabling her erratic behavior while conspiring in the marginalization of the children. Fortunately, “Grandpa†is a wise and compassionate person, and manages to mitigate the worst of the difficulties the children face by introducing them to beekeeping.Although it is amazing how much Meredith seems to remember of her experiences from the age of five until her high school years, one has to assume that this has been facilitated by her later career as a journalist, during which time she has presumably honed her memory and observational skills. The interweaving of apiary lore with which the story is told offers deep psychological insight and wisdom, as well as depth and texture to the narrative. In all, this is a story of the triumph of the “Spirit of Community†which is epitomized by the bees but mediated through Grandpa. This memoir is deeply moving and well worth reading.
While there are many, many stories about individuals who feel they were "saved" by animals as children, due to a difficult childhood, it's unusual to find a story about being "saved" by insects. Actually, it was both bees and a caring grandfather that helped Meredith Mays deal with a mentally ill mother, divorced parents, and a grandmother who let it be known she did not want to be raising her grandchildren. Her grandfather, however, gave the author and her younger brother time, attention, affection, and guidance about mapping out a future for themselves. He was a beekeeper, like his father and grandfather before him, and often used bees as examples of how to be and how to survive in a challenging world.The reader learns all sorts of fascinating facts about honeybees, as well as learns some good ways of navigating through childhood in a positive, productive manner. The latter often made it seem like this was actually a memoir intended more for YA readers than adult readers. In addition, there were problems believing some of the memories Ms. Mays included in the story. One of the main problems was believing she could even remember all the events and feelings she writes about when she was five and six years old. She would have to have a highly unusual type of memory to do so. Moreover, she had to be an incredibly insightful, wise child to be thinking what she said she was thinking at those ages.For example, she tells how she went to visit her mother's biological father, at the age of five or six, a man who badly abused her mother. (Her loving grandfather was her grandmother's second husband, a man she married when her daughter was 19.) After leaving his house, and listening to her mother rant and rave about her uncaring father on the way back home, the author states: "Just catching this glimpse into her past, I became more sympathetic . . . the "world was hard for her, and I needed to be patient because there were deep reasons from her past that made her give up on the present". A really young child is thinking that? Doubtful.Another example was when Ms. May's father comes to visit them in California for the first time. When she realized he was leaving them all behind, she started sobbing and sobbed even harder when she looked at her little brother. Now, that is an incident someone could easily remember that happened to them at the age of five, since it was so traumatic. Yet the author states the reason she was even more distressed after looking at her brother was because: "He probably wouldn't remember this day, and that made me cry even harder." A 5-year-old would have such a thought? It's hard to believe any 5-year-old would or could have such a thought. If the reader can get past such improbable claims, however, this memoir is certainly worth the time it takes to read it; if only to learn all about honeybees, and how important they are to food production.
