Most or all essential information for beginners seems to have been included (I say "seems" because I am a beginner myself and i do not know what i do not know). Besides the basics of temperature, humidity, air movement and light, the book includes information on repotting, propagation, fertilization, and inducing blooming. The book is very compact and can be read in under an hour. That makes it a great reference since you do not need to spend hours searching for the information. Well worth the $2.99.Two issues I felt could be improved on are light and cutting the stem for propagation. With light meters available for less than $20, the book could have mentioned lux instead of using your hand's shadow. It also did not mention what signs the plant might show when it is receiving too much or too little light. There was no mention of what color spectrum should be used if using artificial lights. Second, i was unsure that i understood the author's description of propagation by cutting the main stalk. A picture accompanying the explanation would have been extremely valuable.
A good first introduction of Phal orchids for beginners. If you are intimidated by heavy botany or lengthy texts then this short and sweet care guide is for you. Its a fast and light read that is easy to understand even if you have no orchid experience. If you already own a few orchids or have basic horticultural knowledge then you may wish to skip this in favor of a more intermediate text.
Really quite a basic guide for those who are just beginning to grow orchids. Probably quite valuable for folks whose store-bought orchids have finished flowering and want to keep the plant for successive bloomings.
I felt they were very realistic. I placed the two in a pot where I had an orchids plant that had lost its plume. They are large and healthy looking flowers with bids at the end of the stalks.
This is quite the handy little book for beginners and more advanced growers alike. Lots of clear info without getting all textbook on you. For this price I would certainly pick it up.
I really liked the pictures section and the simple, detailed steps in each chapter! Because I'm just getting into orchid growing again, I'm trying to make sure I keep all of my plants alive this time! With this book in my hands I'm finally confident they will regularly bloom for me. And I really love the amount of time it saved me from having to research all this information. It is well worth buying!
My girlfriend and I are starting to raise some of the more "popular" orchids. We started hunting around for good books so we do not kill our plants before they even bloom and came across this one. We definitely love this guide, especially the step-by-step directions and the pictures at the end. Everything was very easy to follow and we will definitely follow her advice!
