I've read every one of his books (some several times) and have always been thrilled, and Veracity is no exception. I saw the author's release announcement on Facebook, and immediately downloaded it to the Kindle app on my Pixel 2. I made the mistake of starting to read what I thought would be the first few pages, and instead read the whole book in one sitting on my phone's too-small screen. I have a massive headache, but it was worth it. As always, Richards integrates near-future tech into an action-packed story that's impossible to put down. His books inevitably pose far-reaching questions of morality and policy that will keep you thinking weeks after you've finished the last chapter. You can't go wrong with this guy!
The thing I like about Doug's writing is that it is all within the very near realm of possibility. He does his research and I enjoy his notes at the end almost as much (I said almost, Doug) as the novel itself. His thoughts about tribalism and perception bias are on the mark. With our newsfeeds being curated to keep us coming back for more advertising, do any of us take measures to consciously look for opinions that don't match our own?
This is another outstanding “near future†adventure novel by Douglas E. Richards.Elias Gibson, a VR computer expert, has come up with an earth shattering invention and begins to share it with his gusts, his son Conner and Connor’s wife Paige. He first gives them a fascinating introduction about mankind’s increasing fears and pessimism in the modern era, despite all the actual improvements that have been and continue to be achieved, especially through technology.But they are interrupted by an attack led by a deadly mercenary paid by an unknown person, Jake (aka Vader), to assassinate Elias. Perhaps unintentionally, Douglas Richards makes a very good case for having a self-defense weapon at home! Connor, with no combat experience or weapons, is a voracious reader of fiction thrillers and puts this to good use.Kayla, a mysterious person working with Elias, has joined the fray. Together the four, Elias, Connor, Paige, and Kayla, go to Kayla’s presumably impenetrable safe house which is outfitted with steel walls and automatic armaments.Then we learn something of Elias‘ invention, “Veracityâ€, a foolproof lie detector that operates remotely without the subject being aware, and of the importance of a special, advanced supercomputer to operate Veracity.An attack is made on the safe house by Jake’s people to get the supercomputer’s location, and the four are captured and torture begins. In the process Veracity is used by them to discover the shocking identity of Jake.Additionally, there are Elias‘ very interesting discussions of our innate nature to pay more attention to negative information than to positive and the role politicians and the media have had in sowing seeds of divisiveness with their lies going undetected.My comments in this review cover only the opening part of this rich and exciting novel. To go further would make this a spoiler. Finally, I will mention that the book is flawlessly written, as we’ve come to expect from Douglas Richards.Martin Fricke, Ph.D.San Diego
I've read all of Richards' books after really loving Amped and Wired. The near-future elements in those books were extremely convincing and because they were his first books, it was easier to overlook the stilted style that Richards writes in. I ended up skimming through most of this as I was interested in how he developed his idea that is one thing that remains great, Richards does put his finger on great ideas. But the last few novels have been painful to read. There is no story telling it is pure exposition. Richards tells me exactly what the characters are thinking and at such tedious length. Instead of painting a picture to describe some relevant facts, the characters just lecture me on them. Which leads to some of the weirdest, most dry dialogues imaginable. Tell me a story about the background. Have the character recall an incident. But don't pack everything into dialogue. Especially when it sounds so wooden. Maybe it was supposed to be tongue in cheek when Connor was lecturing me on what makes a good Techno-Thriller at the beginning of the book. I found it cringeworthy. Sorry Mr Richards, I'm not sure I'm going to buy the next one.
Doug has done it again! If you’re not familiar with his work, Doug is the best author of near future science fiction thrillers I have ever read, and I read a lot. His plots are rollercoasters, and steel ones at that. As a former scientist (is that like calling someone a former Marine?) his facts are meticulously researched and his fiction only slightly speculative. At the end of his books he always lists his sources, so we can form our own opinions or study more deeply. In the case of Veracity, if you think that the world is getting worse and worse—possibly even fast—your spirits will be lifted to learn that things almost everywhere on Earth are far better than they have ever been and getting even better at an accelerating pace. And remember, this is backed up by research. HIGHLY recommended!
What if you couldn't lie? Most politicians lie or stretch the truth about themselves or their opponents. The media is filled with fake news. You tell yourself you never lie but what about white lies? You tell a friend you like their new shirt to spare their feelings. Someone invents a technology to detect lies. There are forces that want to stop him from releasing his new technology. The book has non-stop action and plot twists that you don't see coming. It also has great insights into the impact on society and people's lives of what happens of politicians, reports, and regular people can't lie. Another great Techno Thriller from Doug Richards!
