Review

"Only rarely does a book come along that can truly change your life. Mind Over Mood is such a book. Dennis Greenberger and Christine A. Padesky have distilled the wisdom and science of psychotherapy and written an easily understandable manual for change."--from the Foreword by Aaron T. Beck, MD, developer of cognitive therapy "Based on over 40 years of front-line research, this renowned book provides clinically proven strategies to help you manage your mind and the emotions that can so easily destroy your quality of life. Drs. Greenberger and Padesky show how your thoughts affect your feelings and teach step-by-step skills so you can free yourself from painful moods. The first edition of this book was a classic--the second edition is even better, and will be a trusted guide for even more people across the globe."--Mark Williams, DPhil, coauthor of The Mindful Way Workbook "Over a million people have used Mind Over Mood to alleviate--and in many cases eliminate--the suffering caused by depression and other psychological problems. Drs. Greenberger and Padesky are brilliant therapists whose thoroughly updated second edition is informed by the latest research and therapeutic innovations. Science has demonstrated incontrovertibly that changing the way we think about emotional situations is among the most powerful ways to change emotions themselves. Everyone struggling with challenging moods or emotions should read this book."--David H. Barlow, PhD, ABPP, coauthor of 10 Steps to Mastering Stress "True to its title, this book really can help you transform your thinking so you can make lasting changes."--Judith S. Beck, PhD, President, Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy"Mind Over Mood provides effective cognitive techniques for patients to develop a more balanced view of themselves, to challenge the automatic thoughts, assumptions, and core beliefs they dearly hold….Mind Over Mood; has many great features, including: (1) clear organization and structure, (2) readability, (3) analogies to supplement explanations…(4) summaries, helpful hints, questions, worksheets, and exercises that reinforce learning for patients, (5) excellent chapters on specific problems…(6) helpful sections on mindfulness, assertiveness, gratitude, forgiveness, and positive psychology….For physicians like me who are looking for ways to prevent burnout in these chaotic times in medicine, the greatest benefit I had reading and underlining the pages in this book was what I learned about my own cognitive distortions, assumptions, and biases. I gained a renewed sense of self, one that is mentally and emotionally more flexible to challenge core assumptions and beliefs about myself, spouse, patients, colleagues, and friends--and electronic health record administrators!” (Family Medicine 2017-02-01)“The book divides the techniques into small chunks accompanied by clear explanations. A therapist or school social worker could also use this format to teach a student or client about the way they think or to use self-talk. Later chapters guide the reader to challenge or create alternative healthier thoughts. The authors also tackle previously held assumptions and how these can negatively affect our core beliefs. The explanations are helpful because the reader can learn why the strategies can work….I can appreciate how the reproducible worksheets could be used for data collection to measure goals with students as well as to teach coping mechanisms that students can use when out of the social work office. The practical CBT techniques make a lot of sense in a school setting, and the empowerment the school social worker can provide to students when they find they can continue to help themselves would be a win-win.” (School Social Work Journal 2016-09-01)"How refreshing it is to find a book which soars above the rest and systematically engages the reader to make real and long-lasting change….A workbook that has proven to be very popular, finding its place in and amongst the essential reading lists for anyone suffering with a common mental health problem….The format and structure of this book is clear, accessible, well-paced, and engaging….The content is clearly cross-referenced and the reader is guided every step of the way, allowing it to suit their own individual needs….Perhaps of greatest value is its reflexivity, with helpful hints and constant mood check-ups available to emphasize the importance of verifying whether the techniques used are beneficial….Each chapter is accompanied by a series of case scenarios which are constantly revisited throughout the book, creating an air of familiarity and a feeling that you are not alone in working through these worksheets. I found myself reading these case scenarios with great interest, eager to find out how each individual resolved their issues using the techniques described in this book….Another strength of this book is the way it communicates the message that negative thoughts are a natural component of the human experience, and to deny their influence and presence would be unwise. Instead, the reader is encouraged to accept and incorporate these thoughts into their daily lives, creating alternative and balanced thinking patterns that are more realistic and constructive….Mind Over Mood is a well-executed and systematic approach for teaching and developing the skills in evidence-based CBT techniques. The content is accessible, easy-to-follow, and makes use of several helpful hints to boost enjoyment and success with the book.” (Journal of Psychological Therapies in Primary Care 2015-06-01)

If you have the original Mind Over Mood you don't really need to upgrade, but it's still an amazing book for clinicians and patients.

This is solid help. I fell in love with cognitive behavioral therapy a few years ago. After a year of slogging through with a wonderful therapist, realizing I needed a shift in perspective, I had new tools. It's amazing how much everyone compares him or herself to others. The expectations we have of ourselves and others cause real pain. This book does a concrete job of helping you sort out your thoughts. And helping you understand how those thoughts lead to feelings and behaviors. When you realize it is your thoughts that are triggering feelings, irrational fears, and your often harmful actions, you can work on stopping the thought. If one uses this book right, day by day, he or she can learn to stop the thought in progress before it spirals. I've read a lot of cognitive behavioral materials over the years. But I'd probably recommend this one most highly. Four stars not five, because it's long, and requires a lot of investment of mental energy which most depressed and anxious people don't have. But committing to 30 minutes a day until you're done; writing down your fears, worries, angers, concerns....could be real help. Especially if you're anti-therapist. Which you shouldn't be. A therapist saved my brain. I highly recommend them.

A few years ago, my IOP program used Mind Over Mood to teach CBT. Being very depressed and without prior knowledge of CBT, I found the book overwhelming because (1) it has sections for depression, anxiety, and anger, guilt and shame. (2) I wasn't able to follow the characters' stories throughout the book, and (3) it was difficult to learn Thought Records and to challenge my thoughts and my core beliefs. I had to set the book aside for a long time because it wasn't alleviating my immediate depression needs. However, since my depression has improved, it's easy for me to tackle the CBT skills outlined in the book, corrolate them to my mood, and incorporate them into my life. It's a lot of work but well worth it.The bottom line for me is that the book wasn't readable/doable when I was depressed. Having elevated my mind mood, through other means, I can now read/do the workbook, utilize the worksheets and exercises, and I'm hopeful that CBT, along with other tools, will improve my life.Best of luck!

When I started seeing my therapist she reccomended I use this book to help me understand how to better apply the things we talk about to everyday occurrences, and it really did help. With these examples, and fill in workbook self situation reflections, I was really able to understand better what I needed to do to have a different outlook, and change my bitterness and depression I had been dealing with for so long. I was way motivated to fly through this book, and I did in the first handful of chapters, but as it got a little more complex halfway through I started to step away from it. If that happens to you please please go through it with your therapist (if you are committed to changing / getting help). After explaining my boredom with the following chapters she helped me understand them verbally and in a different way so I would keep motivated. This book is great, and even better as long as you have a good therapist to help you along the way.

It is a good workbook that has a good cognitive aproach, which is popular right now. I bought for a friend and she uses it. I think it is hard to simply will yourself into thinking differently. This book coaches the moody soul. It isn't simply replacing thoughts with mantras like "I feel great!" It is a process of understanding where you are and using logical evaluations with replacement behaviors. It could be more behavioral, and then I would give it 5 stars.

I'm a psychiatrist and I use this book all of the time with my CBT patients. I actually use both, this one and the first edition (I let my patients decide based on cost/availability). It's easy to follow and comprehend for the providers and the patients, and my patients like the structure of this book.

This is one of the best books out there. This is a workbook, along with a great deal of text. It helped me overcome several issues I had with adjustment disorder. Not only did it help with that, it truly made a difference in how I handle issues with family and co-workers. There should be a semester of school required for everyone with this curriculum. It is life changing stuff.

I bought this book for a graduate-level course and I have to say: this is no ordinary textbook. This book has completely changed the way I view CBT and it has also made me more insightful when it comes to my own cognitions, thoughts, and moods. This book is amazing whether you're a student, professor, clinical practitioner, or just someone who wants to get a handle on your own behavior. This book is awesome and I actually look forward to reading the assigned chapters in my CBT class. It's the first time in my educational career I have ever looked forward to reading assigned texts.

Man. A lot of work. Very thorough. Probably one of the must updated dissertations on the subject of cognitive dissonance and therapy. But you have to take this book seriously and follow its homework and precepts to achieve the benefits. I would say this book is written at the therapist level in many ways.
