Worthwhile only for basic narrative of the time between WWII and US entry to Vietnam. Logevall is completely Eurocentric in his opinions and his disdain for the US and Eisenhower wear very thin quickly. It is interesting how readily he accuses a great man like Eisenhower of being cynical and duplicitous yet fails to acknowledge the incredible British and French cynicism and ruthless pursuit of interests that have been a European hallmark for all of modern history. I would probably not purchase this book knowing what I do now but that is primarily due to the unpleasant editorializing of the author - the basic historical facts and background are interesting.

I also work at the Cambodian Landmine Museum as the manager. Before that I was a businessman and a hisotry teacher. Before that I was an officer in the US Army in 1970/1971.This is the best book I have found to understand how and why the US ended up fighting a nearly 20 year war in Southeast Asia. I give daily tours to tourists from around the world, and a big part of the tour is the Vietnam War, which created all the problems that plagued Cambodia in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Excellent writing and depiction of facts supported by endless footnotes (placed in a separate section so as not to interfere with reading), this book is fascinating with its simple, yet simultaneously complex explanation of immediate post WW2 events in French Indochina. There were many instances during the evolution of the circumstance that the French or Americans could have said 'No' and turned away, but they didn't. The book is maddening at times because we learned exactly the same lessons as the French and had we paid attention, would not (hopefully) become embroiled in tbis war.Many, many times I found myself thinking incredulously 'We did what?' I just finished reading about (then) Vice-President Nixon's visit to Hanoi in 1953. Ominous words and passages from Ho Chi Mhin, and other world leaders lead you down a path of sad inevitability. Over 700 pages of me thinking 'wake up America!' but when you take everything at face value, it was inevitable. The sad part comes from the realization we don't learn from our mistakes and our politicians only seem to listen to those that support or perpetuate their cause or agenda. I have a new found appreciation for how to ask the pertinent questions of our policy makers and when to start publicly asking questions - loudly. This is a book of circumstance, unavoidable events (the death of FDR), that sets the stage for politicians to make uneducated and biased decisions that will destroy the heart of our nation.
This is a phenomenal book, both in the scope of its scholarship and the ease of its reading. One of the strong points of the book is the balanced and respectful approach to all of the participants in the story. Works of History which demonize the players have a cartoon quality. This book respects the richness of human existence and its complex, multivalent quality.Individual players are given brief introductions that give us a feel for who they were. There are no caricatures. All of the players are seen as human beings, with strengths and weaknesses. Particular events of importance, such as the battle of Dien Bien Phu, are given careful attention, letting the events unfold with novelistic power.The book is immensely readable; the prose flows and carries the reader along. The story described in the book is obviously important, both in terms of (1) understanding American history after World War II and (2) for the lessons that can be gleaned from the collapse of colonialism and America's expansion of its power. The book does not preach, but lets the reader reach his or her own conclusions from the rich, complex history that unfolds in its pages.This is an outstanding work of history that is exceptionally well written. The story itself is powerful. Like a Greek tragedy, we see each step that leads to the ultimate tragedy. Anyone interested in how America came to be entangled in Vietnam should read this book. Anyone interested in understanding the pitfalls of a foreign policy that ignores complex, multifaceted local realities, would benefit as well.
